Steven H. Dewey, MD

Dr. Dewey’s accomplishments in the field of ophthalmology are recognized internationally for improving the safety and efficiency of cataract surgery. He is perhaps best known for developing the safest cataract surgery needle, the “Dewey Radius Tip.” This patented device is manufactured by MicroSurgical Technology of Redmond, WA, and is specifically rounded at its edges to improve the safety of the needle for cataract surgery. This is in stark contrast to the razor-sharp, and often burred, edges of standard needles for cataract surgery. “This is just like wearing a seat belt while driving or a helmet while on a bicycle,” Dr. Dewey said. “We don’t like to have issues arise during cataract surgery from accidental contact of the needle with the delicate contents of the eye, but this will happen on occasion. Using the Dewey Radius Tip has been proven to reduce potential damage as a result of accidental contact that could otherwise jeopardize a patient’s surgical outcome.”

In addition to the Dewey Radius Tip, Dr. Dewey has prepared videos and given podium presentations on original techniques for cataract surgery here and abroad. He has been an invited speaker for meetings in the United States, Europe, Canada, South America and Asia. The innovative nature of his techniques at improving the safety of cataract surgery, and thus improving the outcome for the patient, has garnished him several awards at national and international meetings. One of his most personally rewarding recognitions was election into the International Intraocular Implant Club in 2010.

He has served as a committee member of the Cataract Clinical Committee for both the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. In that role, he evaluated the latest technology and techniques, and assisted in assembling the educational curriculum for both societies’ annual meetings.

Dr. Dewey’s practice encompasses a broad expertise in ophthalmology, from treating glaucoma and diabetic eye disease to his current emphasis-cataract surgery. “My staff and I will take care of quite a few patients for cataract surgery in a given year,” Dr. Dewey states. “Our intent is to personalize the experience for the patient as much as possible, and balance this with the best level of efficiency we can attain. While some practices employ surgical counselors or use videotapes, I feel these are much too impersonal. I do all of my own counseling regarding the surgery. This way, I can be certain I’ve answered all of the patients’ questions in general and identified to them how we can apply our best technologies to their individual situation.”

Dr. Steven Dewey was born in Kansas City and raised in Independence, Missouri. There he graduated valedictorian from Truman High School and received numerous local, state and national awards for his efforts in journalism and forensics/debate.

After high school, he spent the next nine years at the University of Missouri-Columbia, first graduating Phi Beta Kappa with General Honors in 1983 with a BA in Biology. He remained there to graduate Cum Laude with his degree in medicine in 1987, and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha as well. He spent the next year as an intern at the University Hospital. He married during medical school and moved to Oklahoma City for his residency at the prestigious Dean A. McGee Eye Institute.

Dr. Dewey has four children, all born in Colorado Springs. An Eagle Scout himself, Dr. Dewey mentored his two sons to the rank of Eagle. While the family is now grown, they still enjoy biking, hiking, skiing and swimming.
